Good grief, it all comes back to me[1]. The Myra Hindley
thread. The guns thread. The repeated arguments with
alt.fan.tolkien. The movie thread. The bullying thread.
Suddenly the current State of AFP doesn't seem so bad...
(And a thread headed "[M] Quality not quantity -- *please*".
Plus ca change...)

Heh. Not actually that much difference as far as I can see - quoted vs
new rate is still in the 40%'s, still lots of subjects and lots of
posters... only thing I spotted is that for posting volumes me and
himself seem to have vaguely swapped places in the list *LOL*

Interesting, but ...
I'd have to wonder what the methodology is with regard to things
like X-No-Archive posts and so forth; and how much of AFP your news
server gets.
(Unfortunately, a fair bit of Debian developerland is not available
at the moment, following last week's compromise of gluck; thus
checking is somewhat harder than it might otherwise be.)
There does appear to be some degree of variance with Google's
stats - see
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.fan.pratchett/about?hl= en -
although this could well be Google's screwup;
By a (very rough) yardstick:
2003 sample period:
Google: ~18000
Aq: 57000
2006 sample period:
Google: 35000+
Aq: 29000
Given that 2006's sample period is twice as long as 2003's, this
would tend to indicate that AFP in 2006 is a quarter as busy as it
was in 2003; and has a quarter of the posters.
cheers,
Gideon.

Apart from the fact that at the start of 2003 there were apparently 650
messages per day compared to 162 per day at the start of 2006? Sorry, but
that gem indicates to me that the whole lot is completely bogus. There is
NO WAY ON EARTH that traffic 3 years ago was four times higher than it is
now.
I suspect that either Aq's news server has been missing a lot of posts
lately, or he's been unsubscribed part of the time recently, or he has spam
rules that dump messages before they get as far as the stats program - all
of which mean these figures are meaningless.

Sounds about right to me. Back in the day there were usually
about 50 new messages by the time I finished reading the
overnight ones. These days, there's often nothing except my
own posts.

And a bra thread, and one on UK ID cards.
Let's all hope we *don't* have a shuttle thread... other than to
congratulate them on a safe return.
